Looks Like We Made It!

We chipped our way out and life is back to mostly normal.

Our day inside yesterday was a good one.

I cleaned off the old changing table that we've been using as basic shelving in the living room and moved it into the kitchen. It will act as a center shelf unit for now and my hope is that Jeff will magically transform it into an actual kitchen island.

I made breakfast- eggs, bacon, toast. I made lunch- sanwiches, soup, apple slices, and chicken tacos (Trader Joe's frozen). I made dinner.

I want to tell you about my dinner. Because I rarely cook anymore and I made a yummy dinner from scratch that I really enjoyed. My kids didn't eat it and I'm fine with that. Jeff ate it and I don't know if he liked it or not- and I don't care.

I made chicken and dumplings. I have no idea if I made it true to any actual recipe. I totally made this up as I went. I had a chicken carcass (from a rotiserrie chicken) with a decent amount of meat still on it. I boiled it and removed the meat. I strained the water after it had boiled for a while. I then added the chicken pieces back in along with egg noodles and frozen peas. I added some cream soup base and corn startch to thicken it up. Then did Bisquick dumplings on top. Made it all in the dutch oven Christy got me for Christmas.

It was yummy and it was ideal comfort food.

Jeff and I watched Avatar after the kids went to bed. Well, finished watching it. We'd started it about a week or so ago. The effects were awesome, the movie was... meh.

The kids played and sometimes fought and sometimes whined.

It was the kind of day I've been wanting for a long time.

Today, it's back to real life. No more days in pajamas, no more lounging around, no more home cooking for every meal, no more home projects. We had to get up, get dressed, eat a quick bite, get out the door. I have a work dinner tonight so I won't see the kids until after bedtime.

It's good to get back into the normal routine. But it was great having that time at home.

I think I want more ice...

No snowman building? No playing out in the snow?

There's no snow to play in!! People on Facebook were sharing pics and stories of putting dogs out and they just glide across the ice. I walked across my driveway this morning to the mailbox and didn't even leave footprints!

Day 3 at home for us, though I've emerged from my slug status. No laptop on the couch for me. I'm sitting at the kitchen table working.

Why did you need to boil the chicken carcass? I'm no chef, so I'm curious. Chicken and dumplings sounds homey and delicious to me.

OK, so no ice skating?

Amy, I made my own stock instead of used canned or powdered stock/broth.

No ice skating for us, Garret. But I have friends with stories of some big falls! Ouch!

Liz, you really should have gotten outside. Maybe ice cube making? ;-)

I would like to have seen some video of the kids trying to make "ice angels!"

When we had ice a few weeks ago, we suspect Rosie may have pulled something with all her sliding around. It took her awhile to learn to be cautious--even her claws didn't help much.

I'm glad you survived the ice!

That's one thing about California. We don't get days like that.
