CAT BAT BOX DOG

Teagan is amazing us with some literacy skills... we knew it was coming and we knew she was smart but we really didn't think she'd already be READING. One of the things we love about Little Explorers and about Ms Sally as the Kindergarten teacher is all of the stages and signs of reading that Ms Sally talks about. From re-telling stories to making up stories to writing gibberish scribbles and translating them to letter recognition and so on. And we've seen all of those stages. Sunday- she knocked our socks off. We were eating lunch- we usually go out with Jeff's folks after church. We had settled in to a large booth at a nearby Mexican restaurant and Pop-pop was asking Teagan "What does c-a-t spell?" I grabbed a pen and a napkin and wrote out the letters for her to see... "CAT!" We all praise her- Good job! That's right! Wow! How about... d-o-g? "DOG!" She then grabs the pen and writes- with NO prompting, NO hinting... BOX "BOX!" WOOOO!!! She just wrote and read the word BOX! Completely on her own! Pop-pop fed her some more letter. b-a-t She meticulously wrote them out and then... "BAT!" She's recently wowed me by reading "Stop" and "Happy," too. Totally unprompted, out of nowhere. She turns 5 in about a month. She's going to start Kindergarten in the fall. And at this rate- she will be a full on reader when she starts.

My nephew is just a couple of months younger than Teagan and I'm excited because he's showing signs that he's on the verge of reading, too. My sister-in-law (who happens to be a teacher) wants to just let him progress "naturally" and learn to read in kindergarten. But I'm wanting him to start reading before that and am going to try to work with him this summer.
