Preparing to Mourn

The end is coming.
There is no chance, it seems, of a continuation or extension.
It is completely out of my control.
My life will change. Perhaps for the better but it doesn't feel that way.
The digital age is upon us.
I love my tv at work. It's a little black and white unit with a radio and CD player. But I bought it for the little tv. Don't get me wrong- I don't sit at work and watch tv all day. But if I'm going to have background noise, I like tv. I like having the news on in the morning. I like listening to The View. I like silly end of the day talk shows like Dr Phil and even shows where I might learn something like Oprah. Some days my tv never gets turned on and some days it is on most of the day. I like listening and being able to glance over to see what's being talked about. I like being able to connect to news coverage when something happens.
But... in a couple short, too fast weeks... my love affair will come to an abrupt end.
I could save up and buy a TV for well over $100... but then I lose my radio and CD player.
I think I'll wear black on 2/17/09. I know many, including my husband, are excited and eager for this transition. Speaking from a completely selfish place... I'm not. Generally speaking, I don't really care. But this is going to impact me on a more personal level than I'd anticipated.
It's going to suck.

I feel your pain, Liz. I have a little SONY combination TV/Radio that I might as well throw in the trash. I never used it much anyway because our TV reception here is lousy without cable. But not having your TV white noise will be like losing a friend.

My condolences.

Get the converter box! They have coupons - I think the final cost will be $20-$25. Google it.

I can relate. We didn't get our coupon and we'll need a converter thingy for the TV here. I'm bummed.

I could get the converter box- but it's about the size of my TV. Plus I'd probably have to also get the digital antenna because I don't get fantastic reception anyway... I figure the portable tv sets will eventually become reasonably priced...

Breaking news Liz! Congress just passed the bill to delay the converstion. Just heard it on the news. It now won't happen until June!

We have cable, so we're mostly okay, but I have a tiny black and white, battery-operated TV that is for emergency power outages that last more than a day. (I can live without TV for one day, but after that I get a little crazy!)

My little emergency television will be useless, too. I'm sure we're going to have some huge storm that knocks out power for a week right after the digital switch over!

What kind of job do you have that you're allowed to watch/listen to TV? I want that kind of job!

Wait!! The governor just called...you'll probably get a reprieve! It looks like the President will probably succeed in pushing the Doom Date back to June. So suck up all the radiation you can!

We already got and installed our converter box, but it causes this weird crackling noise on every station. It does give us 24-hour weather reports on the sub-channels though. For what that's worth. I don't know what we're gonna do; that's the only source of tv we've got.

Stupid digital age.
