A Literary Vent
Grrrrr...
I hate it when you are alongside someone starting their literary career. When you read their first novel, like, say... Good In Bed by Jennifer Weiner. And you fall in love. And you await the release of each book thereafter... and you eat up those paperbacks... you connect with each character she presents. Your life seems to line up with what she's writing. You find that the events in her life that are impacting her writing align with your own and you feel more connected...
Little Earthquakes is one of my all time, hands down favorite books. Anytime anyone asks for a book recommendation, that is top of my list. Jennifer Weiner captures motherhood in a way I'd never read before.
Good In Bed introduced me to characters that I understood... Cannie was someone that I would either be very good friends or with or just be. Cannie's story continued with In Her Shoes (which was made into a movie- that I admit to not seeing). And again with Certain Girls.
And you get to the point that you start watching for the release date of the next book...
I've been eagerly awaiting the release of her newest book- Best Friends Forever. I was all set to buy it on the day it was released. I've become a fan of Jennifer Weiner on Facebook. I read her blog. I'm only minorly obsessed, really.
Can I tell you how pissed I am that this book is being released as hardcover only until May 2010??? I've been loyally buying up paperbacks, supporting this author... and now I either get the book from the library or wait until the paperback comes out. Because I won't pay $18 for the book.
And it isn't even just about the money. Because I have a gift card from being a Smartypants. But since every other J. Weiner book on my shelf is paperback, it would be stupid to go hard cover at this point. And hard cover doesn't fit nicely in my purse or easily transport to various playgrounds and waiting rooms and lunch tables and workout machines...
Grrrr...

try amazon dot com in a few they sell used in excellent condition books you might be able to pick it up very reasonable there.
That's where this all started! I was doing a little shopping with that Smartypants gift card I won from The Pioneer Woman. I thought it was a great chance to maybe get the book... but it is only available in hardcover right now. And I just won't do it!
Heh, I'm a different kind of reader than you. I only read at home and I LOVE hardbacks. We have well over 3000 hardcover books arranged alphabetically and cataloged. (I'm a hobby librarian.)
That said, I won't pay that much for a book either. I know it's hard, but if you can wait a month or so, you'll be able to pick up a good deal at an Indy used book store or Amazon -- I'd be surprised if you couldn't get it for about the price of a new paperback.
It doesn't solve your "purse" problem, but maybe you can try to enjoy some of the pleasures of a large book, with large print, and good quality paper -- it might not be your thing, but it's a different reading experience, for sure. =)
PLUS, hard cover books hurt when they hit you in the head after falling out of your hands if you nod off while reading in bed!
Damn that makes me sad too! I love her book, but part of the fun of them is that they are PAPERBACK!
I used to enjoy hardcovers. I have some sets (like Harry Potter) where I have the hard covers. I think what annoys me is she started out in paperback- the whole "chick lit" writer thing. So I collected everything of hers in paperback. And now... harcover. It doesn't match with what I already have.
Jennifer Weiner is EVERYWHERE these days. I haven't read any of her work yet, but want to. Any recommendations on a first book?
:) Alix...
My fave is still Little Earthquakes. Or start with Good In Bed and go through that series (In Her Shoes, Certain Girls). Her collection of short stories is ok- not my fave.
Maybe she'll read your post and send you a copy to tide your over til you can buy the paperback :) You could offer to do a review!!! BTW, did you see that I got to hang with The Pioneer Woman last weekend?!
I did and loved the pics!! I've seen a few blogs where folks got to meet her and MM and the boys. SO cool!!
