Telogen Effluvium

Telogen effluvium. Sounds like a Harry Potter spell or something, doesn't it? Point your wand and shout out- telogen effluvium! See? Alas, it isn't nearly as fun, interesting, or cool as anything related to wizardry... but the solution might be easier to obtain if I happened to know a wizard or two... Telogen effluvium Hair loss. In my case, due to weight loss. I've lost about half of the volume of my hair. I can't wash my hair without losing a handful. I can't brush my hair without filling the brush. I can't run my hand through my hair without coming away with a dozen strands in my hand. According to what I've read, the hair grows in cycles. In a normal healthy person's scalp about 85% of the hair follicles are actively growing hair (anagen hair) and 15% are resting hair (telogen hair). A hair follicle usually grows anagen hair for 4 years or so, then rests for about 4 months. The body endures a shock- in my case, the massive dietary and lifestyle change and rapid weight loss that came as a result- and about 2 months later, new hair starts growing. Which is great except that it's breaking into that anagen - telogen cycle. So the new growth that resulted from the shock to the system starts pushing out the existing hair at a rapid rate. So I'm losing my hair because I'm growing all new hair. I'd shake my head over that one but more hair will just fall out. Photobucket

Weird! I've never heard of that following weight loss, but it makes sense. I lost a bunch of hair after I had my appendix out. Something about the anesthesia the doc told me. Hope the growing in process is quick.

Alix at Casa Hice went through that and had to buy wigs for a while. It grew back eventually. She had heard it was due to losing weight to quickly?

Sadly, I can relate. Mine is STILL post-baby though (10 months later). If it's like last time, it will stop when we wean....I hope! Nothing like finding Cousin It in your shower.....

Yes, I experienced some of this after child birth- but not to the degree of this. I was amazed at the amount of hair I lost post-childbirth but I never felt the huge difference in what was left on my head. My hair is about half as thick as it was even a month ago.

Garret- i don't think it's a matter of "too fast." But I did make a HUGE and drastic change to my diet all at one time so it was a shock to the system. I don't know what Alix's diet was like before she made her changes. Oddly, it can occur due to emotional trauma, too, from what I've read. You better watch out... you don't have much to lose and you could see some big changes coming soon! Eek!

Well, I hate shaving and would welcome hair loss. :-) As long as that the only side effect.

After my first baby, I thought I would go bald. The hair was coming out by handfuls. It eventually stopped, but I don't know if my hair ever went back to normal. Hopefully it stops for you soon.

I am on low dose Chemo meds for my RA and expected to lose a lot of hair. The dr has me on high potency vitamins and folic acid, my hair loss has been minimal. Also, Nioxin hair products work great for hair loss.

Hey, it can also be caused by a LOWER than LOW low-fat diet! Low fat is 20% of your calories coming from fat. When mine hit 10-12% all sorts of unusual things happened to me, including hair loss.

Good luck...
