An Added Benefit to Becoming Fit

With the 2 little trips that we have taken so far this summer- Santa Claus, IN and Fort Wayne, IN- I discovered an added bonus to being a fitness focused mom. You may recall that I posted about workout clothes at one point. I've got quite the collection now. 3 pairs of capris, 1 pair of shorts, 4 sports bras, countless quality wicking socks, various wicking t shirts and tank tops. It's almost an addiction. I love the Champion line at Target for sports bras and tanks. I have found an added benefit to this fitness wardrobe. These are 2 items that I never would have purchased if I hadn't started this whole Healthier Me thing. This is my favorite sports bra and my running belt. The bra was $15 and the belt was $20. That little belt pouch is made of an expandable meshy material that holds a lot more than you might think. I primarily use it to hold my cell phone and car key when I go out for a lunch hour run. When I did Race for the Cure, I also carried some cash, my debit card, and my ID along with the phone and car key. That belt has become hugely useful for any occassion where I don't want to haul around a purse or wallet. Instead of just fastening it around me, I actually run it though my belt loops for security. Then I use it to carry the debit card, cash, ID, phone, car key. The sports bra... this is a necessity for running. I'm currently reading "Run Like A Mother" and it said that some group did some study that a woman's breasts- no matter what size- can move up to 8 inches when running. Ouch! Jeff also noted, when cheering from the sidelines of my 5K, that there were many women who needed to invest in a good sports bra. It's a wicking fabric. This means that the wet sweaty stuff doesn't stay on your skin. So when we have a vacation plan that includes spending a lot of time outdoors, sweating, in the sun... that sports bra quickly becomes the most comfortable undergarment I can wear. It's comfy, it helps me stay cool(ish). I also tend to pair it with one of my workout wicking tanks. Who knew that investing in clothes that enhance my fitness performance and my confidence level could also be so completely functional for fun and everyday life? Photobucket

I think having nice workout clothes is necessary, at least once you know you're serious (which you, clearly, are :)

Are you trying to convince me to buy a sports bra?

Ha. Good of Jeff to take notice and share his observation and concern with you. ;-)

Thanks for the great tips on clothes, and especially the belt.

I've heard something similar about the breast moving. In addition, that breast muscles break down with high impact running, as well as internal organs (reproductive) being affected. Have you come across any of this in your research?

I'm old and fat, so I stick with low impact walking. Sometimes I walk real fast...

Thanks again for sharing!

I have thought about getting a race belt! Those things are so cool. I haven't gotten one because I have pockets in the back of my running tanks, and key pockets in my running shorts. One of my pairs of running shorts also has awesome full-sized zippered pockets. And my Camelbak has pockets too. So I don't know if I need a race belt but they are so cool! I'll probably get one eventually.

With my teeny tiny chest I still need a tight sports bra. I can tell you my boobs do NOT move 8 inches :) but they do move enough that I need them strapped down! Thankfully I have 2 running tanks I LOOOOOVE that have an awesome bra inside, so that's what I'm using this summer.

I love the Champion line. I like that you can get their pants in different lengths because I'm tall and the regular lengths are usually too shore for me. I'm always scoping them out online so that I can buy them when they go on sale.

Alrighty, Garret- it's the end of the day. Did you go bra shopping?

@Liz: I did. I didn't buy anything, I just tried on a dozen or so.

I have noticed too that as I keep losing my former running tanks that fit now do not fit. But, put on a good sports bra and then the running tank and I'm good to go! I have never seen the belt...might have to check that out!

I've found sooooo much confidence in just finding a proper pair of compression style running capri type dealies that kept my mommy tummy from jiggling while running. Before I bought them I was so self conscious and it affected my entire run.

8 inches?! Wow.
