A Garden Report

Guess what we've been eating at my house? Fresh vegetables. From our garden. Organically grown (sludge free, anyway) without pesticides or other crap. A rich mix of topsoil and manure. Carefully watered, keeping an eye on the rain. Watching the tiny sprouts grow and blossom. And now we have squash. Sliced, sauteed in olive oil, seasoned with sea salt and freshly ground tellicherry pepper. And a bounty of tomatoes. Teagan is especially fond of the yellow ones. We had 5 green beans on Friday but they were gobbled up at dinner. I found this last straggler on the vine this afternoon. My mom, who is largely responsible for the success of the garden, is rather jealous of my harvest. Her own garden- larger than my own- has been meticulously watered, fed, cared for... and routinely eaten away by deer and critters. She hasn't enjoyed a single bite from her own plants. But MY garden... my garden is providing a regular supply of tomatoes, squash, and now we are starting to see green beans and cucumbers forming. Maybe I can do this afterall!

Yay! Hooray! It all looks delicious!

Our own garden is looking sadly neglected, but still bravely doling out a few maters every day. We just harvested our first two brussels sprouts plants this weekend--if I ever get back online from home, I might be able to post some pictures.

Congratulations and enjoy your harvest; your child seems much more appreciative of the results than I ever was! :P

Yum! I am in awe :-)

I may end up being dragged kicking and screaming into trying some veggie gardening myself. Tom has developed a bit of an obsession about growing beans since they sprouted some bean seeds as a class project. Now he wants us to grow them properly at home too. Which is odd because he doesn't like beans.

Congratulations Liz! A garden is a huge accomplishment and your veggies look positively delish. Wish I didn't have two black thumbs or I might try it too.

You're making me hungry again! I am far too lazy to grow a vegetable garden and h ten have to cook the food I grow. Isn't that what restaurants are for?

But Alix, you could pee on them. You have the power...

What kind of tomatoes did you plant? They look at lot like the ones we are getting from our garden. Good looking veggies.

We have plum, cherry and yellow pear tomatoes. Teagan's fave are those yellow pear tomatoes!!

Those came from your garden? They look perfect!
I am jealous, I admit it. I haven't had a garden since I was a little kid and I really miss it. There's something about the taste of vegetables you've grown yourself that is different than store-bought produce, isn't there?

My Dad kept a great, large garden, but sadly, I am not bent toward "fun" hours in the dirt. I satisfy my veggie gustatory whims from Delicious Orchards and great roadside stands. ~Mary
