Running

As most of you know, I started a commitment to becoming a Healthier Me back in March. There's a page up there in those tabs if you want to learn more. After I ran the 5K I was training for, I lost my motivation. As my friend Emily wrote on her blog: After the Ragnar - I was a little burnt out on training and running - I had been so laser focused for that that I needed a break. I needed a break. And I took it. I didn't run at all for 2 weeks. Then I really only ran a little bit about once a week, on the treadmill. If I missed a week, I was ok with that. I was still working out and staying active- I just wasn't as "laser focused" as I had been before the 5K. I was actively seeking motivation. I wanted to want to run. I wanted to have the drive to stay on task. But I just couldn't find it. Thankfully, my friend Ashli believes in listening when she hears that divine intervention type of nudge. She got this idea to do a new blog- "I Will Blog 500 Miles." She wants to trek 500 miles in 1 year. That can be walking, running, incline treadmill work, etc. As soon as she told me about it, I knew I needed to be part of it. I knew this would create accountability, motivation, and inspiration. I asked her to guest blog when I was out of town and let that be the kick off of her plan. She did. And I've been motivated ever since. I have been working with my gym to help them get linked in to social networking. You can follow Fiziques on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook and get motivation, nutrition tips, and workout ideas. I'm working towards the 500 Miles in 1 Year Challenge. I started a Challenge group on DailyMile- you should join us! Your miles start logging as soon as you join the Challenge so start up now! I'm going to go back to The Running Company and get new shoes. Now that I have a little more knowledge about running and what I want to accomplish, I feel ready to work with them instead of just seeking guidance. They gave me what I needed before and I know they will do it again. This time, I'm going to find a time to go to the store in Broad Ripple so I can see a friend of a friend who has given me great running advice so far. I'm going to register on Friday for my next 5K. The Indianapolis Monumental offers a 5K, a half-marathon, and a marathon on November 6. Emily is doing the 5K and I think my friend Kris is going to do it, too. Who else? Ashli? Christy? Any of my other running buddies want to come to town that weekend? I've set a new long term goal beyond the 500 Mile Challenge. I'm going to continue running 5K's and build up to doing a 10K in early spring/late winter in preparation for ... the Mini. The Indianapolis 500 Festival Mini Marathon. I want to proudly wear funny t-shirts. I want one of these for my car: And I've started some discussions on my Facebook page about running. The purpose is to get people talking, to get the resources in one place, to keep me motivated and maybe to possibly even motivate YOU! Photobucket

Cool, Liz! And good timing -- our friend just got back from vacation and should be at TRC BR for the next ten days before he has a day off (yikes -- what a way to come back from vacay :O )

I found a bit at loose ends after completing the C25K and my first race -- found I needed to mix things up a bit -- run with buddies, run alone, run w/ different music, run w/o music, run different routes, etc. I think I'll be running to podcasts for a while, since I loved that so much yesterday.

So, are you shooting for the mini in 2011, or 2012?

Good to know, Kris! I was going to ask him on FB. :) I'm shooting for 2011- this coming May. I'm reading, hearing, and being told you need 8-12 weeks of training to be ready for a half marathon. So this gives me plenty of time to gain endurance and strength and then schedule a starting date for training!

Oh- and I listened to a lot of NPR podcasts on my first 5K and loved it! Lake Woebegon, Fresh Air, NPR Shuffle. I was surprised at how well it worked for me!

Miss Chef just found running classes, of all things, to sign up for. The idea is 9 weeks of group runs to build up to a specific 5k in the area. This was exactly the kind of ongoing motivation she needed. She, too, realizes she needs to keep signing up for 5ks to keep herself in training.

Still, if you step back from it, it does sound a little silly. "Classes? To learn how to RUN? Only in America!" :)

The Running Company offers a training group that I've considered joining. It's an awesome deal. You pay $40 or something and are a lifetime member and can join in any training programs. They have pace runners for the group - for those who want to do a 10 min mile, 12 min, 14, whatever. I think that would help me immensely to learn more about pacing. I also think running with a group could be a nice change of pace. So it is something I'm looking at doing, too!

Once again, Flartus, I wish we were neighbors! Miss Chef and I could run together!

You know what is so amazing to me...?

The motivational factor that facebook, blogging, twitter, and daily mile has brought for people to motivate people they've never even met.

Seriously...think about it. I read your blogs about running (and we HAVE met, but still) and that motivated me to try C2_5K. I know people that have tried C2_5K from hearing/reading me talk about it. You lost motivation for running, but found it again with Ashli's 500 mile challenge. I read that and also gained motivation to run more. And you know that spider web of motivation is WAY more far reaching than just you and I...all of your readers and both of mine (ha ha). Readers and posters and strangers may gain motivation to try from what they've read.

Keep on motivating, girl, and when you need some motivation, give a shout out and I bet someone is going to strike that motivational nerve for you and get you going again.

THANK YOU for doing the daily mile challenge. I was using it to log my miles, and now it's automatic for the challenge...loving that! Plus, I am motivated to run a little every time since I have to log it as a run to count! I figure many times it's going to be a walk, but at least if I'm jogging a little it's OK to say I ran!

Liz, You rock. I have to say though...the Mini sounds really cool. I've heard about it before from my brother. He's a longtime (and blazingly fast) runner. I think he may have done the marathon itself in the past if I remember correctly. Anyway, it sounds fun, but 35,000 people?!?!?!? No way, no how, no chance I'm doing that one. I don't like huge crowds to begin with, running or not. There were something like 1,300 at our Komen race and that was as big as I want to go anytime soon. Running on the race track would be incredibly cool though....

The number doesn't terrify me as much as it used to. When I did the Komen Race for the Cur ein April, that was approximately 40K people if I remember correctly. It's actually an amazing feeling to be part of something so huge!! Wine at the Line had about 1600 total participants (1200 doing the 5K, the rest doing the 5 mile).
